taking the pulse | programming 2004-2005
The GNO's 2004-2005 season seeks the pulse of the world around us in the form of installations, sculptures and photographs. The search for identity is central here: Who am I? Who is “the other”? What grip does society hold on individuals? What place does the individual have in society: men, women, their bodies, memory, senses? What are the links between consciousness and the subconscious?
Geneviève Rocher’s sculptural drawings are centered on the individual, often in a state of tension in relation to society. Michèle Provost, in her tri-dimensional installation, multiplies the ways of apprehending reality, while Geneviève Ruest constructs and deconstructs the body to capture memory and personal identity. Fariba Samsami’s installation touchingly denounces the exploitation of women in contemporary Iranian society; François Mathieu joins the banal and the transcendant; and Vessna Perunovich explores the fragility inherent in human identity. Last but not least, the GNO's members' show, which invited artists and curators to come to grips with the question of centrality and marginality, goes on tour.
